Vermont Loves Gays

A state Senate committee unanimously approved a gay marriage bill on Friday, moving Vermont one step closer to allowing same-sex couples to legally wed.

"It provides … gay and lesbian couples the same rights that I have as a married heterosexual," said Sen. John Campbell, vice chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and chief sponsor of the bill.

The measure would replace Vermont’s first-in-the-nation civil unions law with one that allows marriage of same-sex partners beginning Sept. 1.

If approved, Vermont would join Massachusetts and Connecticut as the only U.S. states that allow gays and lesbians to marry.

Supporters of Proposition 8 , the California initiative that eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry last month, reacted with surprise and dismay this weekend to the announcement by the state’s attorney general that he had reversed his position and would ask California ’s high court to invalidate the measure.

Jerry Brown , the state’s attorney general–and a leading candidate to replace Arnold Schwarzenegger as governor in two years–filed papers on Friday asking the state Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8, which amends the state’s Constitution to define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

The decision is a major reversal for Brown, whose office argued against same-sex marriage in the spring, only to see the Supreme Court find a law banning gay marriage unconstitutional. After last month’s election, in which 52 percent of voters effectively reinstated that law by supporting Proposition 8, Brown again said he would support the will of the people.

In a brief filed on Friday, Brown abruptly changed sides, saying he had looked closely at state precedent and had concluded that he couldn’t defend the new law. "Proposition 8 must be invalidated because the amendment process cannot be used to extinguish fundamental constitutional rights without compelling justification," Brown’s brief says. The state Supreme Court, in its decision earlier this year , found that gay couples enjoy the same fundamental right to marry that straight people do.

Gays Get Another Chance!

The California Supreme Court moved swiftly Wednesday to tackle the latest legal showdown over gay marriage, agreeing to consider three lawsuits that challenge the legality of Proposition 8’s abolition of same-sex weddings.

At the same time, the state’s high court rejected a bid to put Proposition 8 on hold while the legal struggle unfolds, postponing indefinitely any new wedding vows for gay and lesbian couples. The Supreme Court indicated it is likely to rule by June.

Let’s hope they make the right decision and do the same thing they did before and rule that Gays have the right to marry!

Welcome To The Gayborhood!

Wow. I had NO IDEA! I knew Wanda Sykes was friendly with the "Gays" but had no clue she was one herself! YAY! I’m glad she is and that she is in a position to "represent" and stand up for our community! Loves it! See what she has to say below!

Wanda Sykes opened up about her sexuality in Las Vegas on Saturday — thanks to the passing of Prop. 8.

"You know, I don’t really talk about my sexual orientation," she told a crowd rallying for the nationwide protest against the California ballot initiative, according to The Associated Press. "I didn’t feel like I had to [before]. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life."

"Everybody that knows me personally, they know I’m gay," she added. "But that’s the way people should be able to live their lives."

But the November 4 passing of Prop. 8, which bans same-sex marriages in the state, made her feel "attacked" — and pushed her into action.

"Now, I gotta get in their face," she reportedly said. "I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay."

Wanda, who was in Sin City to perform at Planet Hollywood, was a surprise addition at the rally. As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, celebs appeared at related demonstrations throughout the country on Saturday, with T.R. Knight, Ricki Lake and more making appearances in LA.
